Biography of Curtis Sliwa
Curtis Sliwa is an American activist, the creator and CEO of the Guardian Angels, as well as a politician and a radio talk show presenter. He is the Republican candidate for mayor of New York City in 2021. Sliwa is the creator and CEO of the Guardian Angels, a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of unarmed crime. Despite the fact that he founded the Guardian Angels, he worked as the night manager at a McDonald’s on Fordham Road in the Bronx.
Curtis attended Brooklyn Prep, a Jesuit high school from which he was subsequently expelled, and then Canarsie High School, a public high school in Brooklyn, New York City. Brown University gave Sliwa a half scholarship to study political science. Curtis worked as a delivery boy for the New York Daily News in his childhood, when he was named Newsboy of the Year and given a trip to the White House after saving many people from a burning building while on a paper route.
Sliwa, Curtis Angels of Protection
Curtis founded the Magnificent 13 in May 1977, a group devoted to fighting violence and crime on the New York City Subway during a crime wave. The Guardian Angels were renamed in 1979 as the ensemble expanded in size. The group’s activities elicited significant positive and negative responses.
The Guardian Angels’ membership revealed that 80 percent of them were of black or Hispanic race. Furthermore, since the organization was unarmed, all members were required to undergo karate instruction and meet legal criteria for citizen arrest before being deployed.
Mayor Ed Koch, a critic of the group, conducted an inquiry into the Guardian Angels, which, according to The Washington Post, turned out to be so favorable that the Guardian Angels will be given official status shortly. The organization’s early supporters included then-Lieutenant Governor Mario Cuomo, who was reported as stating that they are a greater representation of virtue than our city deserves.

Curtis also acknowledged in 1992 that the Guardian Angels’ leader staged dramatic subway rescues for publicity. He also admitted to making a fake allegation that he was abducted by three off-duty transit police officers.
In the early 1980s, Curtis extended his activities to Buffalo, where he was a vocal opponent of local police policies and tactics. A Guardian Angel member, Frank Melvin, was fatally shot by a Newark police officer in December 1981 when the officer misinterpreted the unzipping of his jacket to reveal his Guardian Angels insignia as a threat. Sliwa alleged that the racially motivated death of Melvin, an African American, was carried out by a white officer who was shielded by the police department, rather than the Hispanic officer named as the shooter. Both policemen were absolved of charges in Melvin’s death by an Essex County grand jury.
Murder Attempt on Curtis Sliwa
Curtis was abducted and shot by two gunmen in a stolen cab in Manhattan on June 19, 1992. A shooter hiding in the front passenger seat of the cab picked up Sliwa near his East Village house and fired six bullets, striking him in the crotch and legs. The abduction was thwarted when Sliwa sprang from the moving cab’s front window and fled. Internal injuries and leg wounds necessitated surgery.
Federal authorities accused John A. Gotti, the son of Gamboni family boss John Gotti, with attempted murder and a slew of additional counts. Prosecutors said Gotti was enraged over comments Curtis made about Gotti’s father on his radio show. However, three different jurors were unable to agree to convict Gotti on any of the allegations against him, and the charges were withdrawn after three attempts to trial him, the most recent on September 20, 2005.
Later, jurors informed a reporter that they believed he was involved in Sliwa’s shooting. Prosecutors, on the other hand, refused to retry Gotti and dropped the charges once again. Sliwa said that he will sue in civil court for damages.
Furthermore, a Gotti associate, Michael Yannotti, was accused with shooting Sliwa in the event but was acquitted. Yannotti, on the other hand, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on a separate racketeering crime. Nonetheless, evidence indicated Yannotti was the shooter, according to Manhattan Federal Judge Shira Scheindlin.
