You've probably heard of the traditional layer dips out there, with savory flavors stacked one on top of the other, from the ever-popular Seven-Layer Taco Dip to modern twists like this Greek Layer Dip. So why not take a sweet spin on a classic idea for a fun and decadent centerpiece for your dessert table? You'll never look at layer dip the same way again.
Each component here has something different to offer; creamy tang from the cheesecake filling, chewy bites of rich brownie, pops of tart strawberry, and fresh whipped cream to bring it together. Served with crunchy cookie dippers, you’ve got a perfect balance of texture and flavor all in one bite.
What Is 7-Layer Dessert Dip?
Part parfait, part trifle, and all delicious, this dessert dip is exactly what it sounds like—layers of sweet flavor. While it's a customizable idea, full of possibilities, this version takes chocolate pudding and pairs it with cheesecake filling, brownie pieces, chopped strawberries, whipped cream, and toppings for a festive treat that will get everyone talking (between dips that is).
How to Make 7-Layer Dessert Dip
This no-bake dessert comes together easily in under 30 minutes with a few simple steps. Here's what you'll need:
- First layer: Store-bought cheesecake filling
- Second layer: Brownie pieces
- Third layer: Instant chocolate pudding
- Fourth layer: Chopped strawberries
- Fifth layer: Fresh homemade whipped cream
- Sixth layer: Maraschino cherries
- Seventh layer: Chocolate shavings
If you are baking your brownies rather than using store-bought, allow time for the brownies to completely cool (or make them the day before). Prep the instant pudding first as well since it takes at least 5 minutes to set up. Then spread your layers one by one and serve straight away.
Test Kitchen Tips
- If you can’t find prepared no-bake cheesecake filling, you can just beat softened cream cheese with powdered sugar and a little vanilla.
- If you don’t have pudding mix, you can make homemade pudding or chocolate custard.
Shortcuts and Substitutions
Feel free to switch up any of the layers to your liking. Try different pudding flavors, various berries, or sub pound cake for brownies. It's easy to use store-bought brownies or your favorite box mix to make a quick batch to cut down on prep time.
If you prefer to use frozen whipped topping in place of the whipped cream, make sure to defrost it until it's spreadable. Instead of chocolate shavings, top everything off with chocolate sauce and/or a caramel drizzle and sprinkle on chopped nuts. Have fun with it!
What to Serve With 7-Layer Dessert Dip
This decadent dessert is best served with an assortment of sturdy cookies that will hold up to the dip. Pick up your favorites at the store or try any of these recipes:
- Crispy Gingersnaps
- Shortbread Cookies
- Sugar Cookies
- Biscotti
- Chewy Crispy Coconut Cookies
- Vanilla Wafers
You can also use pizzelles, graham crackers, waffle cone pieces, pretzels, or simply grab a spoon and dig in. Our test kitchen experts recommend spooning out the dip into bowls or onto plates as it can start to get messy when dipping straight in.
How to Store 7-Layer Dessert Dip
This quick recipe can be prepared through Step 5 (the first three layers) up to two days in advance, covered, and stored in the fridge. Add strawberries and whipped cream just before serving.Once the strawberry and whipped cream layers are added, serve within 3 hours. Any longer and the dish will weep and become watery.
